Inside a Humanoid Robot: The Hardware and Software That Make It Move

You see a robot walking across a factory floor. What you do not see is the symphony of engineering happening inside it. 

Let us break it down, no engineering degree required. 

A humanoid robot is essentially two things fused together: a mechanical body and an artificial brain. Neither is enough alone. Here is how they work together. 

The Hardware Side 

At a high level, a humanoid has the same core components as any robot, a body, sensors, actuators, and a control computer. But humanoids integrate a complex array of advanced technologies to achieve human-like mobility and interaction. 

The skeleton is made of lightweight aluminum alloys and carbon fiber, strong enough to carry loads and light enough to walk efficiently. A typical humanoid has 28 to 40 degrees of freedom, which is the number of independent movements it can make across shoulders, elbows, wrists, hips, knees, and ankles. 

The actuators act as the robot's muscles, controlling movement and providing the torque needed for walking, lifting, and manipulation. Most modern humanoids use electric actuators that are efficient, quiet, and highly controllable. Each joint unit combines a motor, gearbox, and embedded sensor into one compact module. 

Then come the sensors, the robot's senses. Cameras, depth sensors, LiDAR, microphones, tactile sensors, and inertial measurement units together give robots the ability to see, hear, feel, and maintain posture. Tactile sensors in the fingers detect pressure and grip, allowing a robot to pick up a fragile egg without crushing it. 

The hands deserve special mention. Today's designs range from 6 to 42 degrees of freedom per hand, compared to 27 in a human hand. Dexterous hands are a critical component, capable of performing complex and delicate tasks including picking up small items and handling fragile objects. 

Battery life remains the biggest hardware limitation. Most humanoids run on lithium-ion packs and currently operate in short intervals before needing a recharge, far below what a full working shift demands. 

The Software Side 

The software stack is layered like a hierarchy of control, similar to how the human nervous system has a brain for high-level thinking and reflex loops for fast, low-level reactions. 

Think of it as three floors in a building. 

The top floor handles AI and reasoning. Vision-language models understand the environment, interpret instructions, and decide what to do next. This is where models like NVIDIA's GR00T or Figure's Helix operate. 

The middle floor handles motion planning. It translates decisions into coordinated movement. The instruction "pick up the box" becomes a sequence of precise joint angles, speed commands, and balance adjustments. 

The ground floor handles real-time control. Low-level microcontrollers near the joints run fast motor control loops, more than 1,000 times per second, to keep the robot balanced and responsive to the environment. 

Building a humanoid is not just robotics. It is mechanical engineering, semiconductor design, and frontier AI all in one package. The focus is now shifting from motion to manipulation. Once hands become truly dexterous, the doors to consumer and medical markets open wide.
